Amazon begins service to deliver packages in garage for Prime members

  • Amazon had first announced Key for Garage service in January this year
  • Customer should have a myQ-compatible garage door opener from LiftMaster or Chamberlain

Amazon has recently announced that Amazon Prime members in the U.S. can now have their packages directly delivered inside their garages.

Reportedly, back in January, Amazon had first announced Key for Garage service, which is an expansion of the company’s current Amazon Key service that allows Amazon drivers access to one’s home or the trunk of their car to deliver packages when the receiver is not there.

Sources familiar with the matter informed that in order to use this new service, a person should have a garage door opener compatible with myQ from LiftMaster or Chamberlain. In addition, Amazon also has a lookup tool which is available on its website so one can easily check whether their current garage door is compatible or not.

If it is not, then for retrofitting the current garage door Amazon will supply a myQ Smart Garage Hub for an initial price of $50. Besides the hardware, one needs a subscription of Amazon Prime to use the newly enabled service.

Amazon’s delivery drivers are thoroughly inspected, with inclusive background checks and also records reviews of motor vehicle, Amazon representative said.

After the hardware and subscription is in place, apparently, one can then select the option of In-Garage Delivery at the checkout process while shopping so that the Amazon’s drivers will leave the package in the garage, sources added.

Amazon has also given the access of controlling the garage remotely using the Key by Amazon app or track the space using a Cloud Cam of Amazon, which is offered as a package with the Smart Garage Hub for an initial price of $125 instead of the regular price of $200.

Sources mentioned that as of today, Amazon Key service covers overall 50 cities across U.S. including new additions Rochester, Las Vegas, and Fresno. Key for Garage is offered in each city where Key by Amazon is offered.
